The principal photography of Mughal-e-Azam began in the early 1950s, with the exact year being disputed between 1951 and 1953.[3] Asif was accompanied by an extensive crew, which included his assistant directors Khalid Akhtar, Rashid Abbasi and Surinder Kapoor. The cinematography by R. D. Mathur,[1] and the choreography was executed by famed Kathak dancer Lachchu Maharaj,[5] who agreed to be a part of the film after initial reluctance. The film's costume design was undertaken by tailors from Delhi, with specialists from Surat-Khambayat executing the embroidery. In addition, the footwear was ordered from Agra, the jewellery made by goldsmiths in Hyderabad, and the crowns designed in Kolhapur.[3] It was later revealed that Mughal-e-Azam had actually been filmed as a trilingual of Hindi/Urdu, Tamil and English, with each sequence being filmed three times for the dialogues in the three languages.[14] 2ff7e9595c
